Mock up of Ancillary Product- Advertisement/ Magazine Cover

Here is my first rough draft for the magazine cover for my ancillary product for media. I have chosen to use a screenshot from the film, as I believe that represents the genre fairly well. This is because it has shops, which shows what it is mainly based around, and also has the back of someones head, showing concentration of shopping. This helps to promote the fact that the main character within this documentary enjoys shopping. This fits the conventions for a magazine cover as well, because this focal image mainly focuses on one thing and that is the person shopping. Below is showing that I found a website online on which to ensemble the first draft, and I started with the screenshot and cropping it so it was just the photo without the bits from YouTube around the outside.

Now that had been cropped, I could use certain effects in order to make the photo for the focal image fit the conventions of being a magazine cover better. I used an effect that made it look slightly cartoon, and did this because it illuminates the shops slightly better, and most magazines have very edited photos on the front cover, so this fits the conventions of a normal magazine cover. I also did it because it made all of the colours slightly more neutral, and fade into one another slightly better.

After this, as you can see below, I started with the typography. I included very separated titles and named the poster 'documentary', to fit in better with the genre. I used titles that you would usually see on the front of a magazine- demonstrating and advertising what is on the inside. This captures the attention of the target audience and causes them to want to read more on the cover, because there may be more that they are interested in. I changed around where they are, and decided to put the main titles at the top as they usually are on a magazine poster. I kept them in white or gray font, because this kept it simplistic and wasn't too bold for the audience.

Overall, I am happy with my first rough draft for my magazine cover. I think this is good because it fits with a lot of conventions of a magazine cover, and also fits the genre of being a social documentary magazine cover, as this is shown in both the titles and focal image. I kept with the main conventions of having titles, and I also plan to put a bar-code and more on the final draft. After this, I am going to do audience reviews and see what they think I could do in order to improve my poster. This will help with making the final draft for my magazine cover.
